Find Inspiration for New Work By Imitating Past Stars In Your Own Style

I have a new friend on Linkedin, a Googler named Jon Youshaei. This is his latest post that appeared in my Linkedin feed and really got me thinking about creativity and imitation:
In the video he points out a few instances of how Beyonce's dance moves were actually completely recycled from old songs, some from the 1960s!

Key Takeaways

  • Beyonce copied a lot of here dance moves from previous artists. Although the choreography was extremely similar, it was still here doing it in here own fresh, new way.
  • Look for the most talented, skilled craftsmen in your industry and copy them. As a front-end coder, learn from your favorite websites, take courses by your favorite angular heroes, talk with others and code collaboratively, and read books by the master-level authors on the subjects.
  • Don't be afraid to copy other people's ideas. You will inherently add your own style to it so you shouldn't need to focus much on how to make it different; that will just happen. As long as you aren't infringing on any trademark / copyright infringements, all is fair in the world of art.
  • Copy with Taste- Jon has a funny was of explaining this one. He says, "Don't just copy and paste- copy with taste!". Basically, copy and pasting would be putting no originality into it; making it totally obvious that you are just copying. Copy with taste gives the next that you are injecting some of your own creativity into it and just using the original as inspiration.
