I love working in the command line because you just feel like you have so much raw power at your fingertips. While the nice GUI windows and popups are the cute and approachable face of your machine, the command shell the backdoor into your computer's soul. I use terminal (the default command shell on Mac computers) quite a lot, and I'm often flipping back and forth between the terminal and other programs; sometimes between terminal and the default directory viewer, Finder. This post is about making that flippage easier.
Open Current Shell Directory In Finder
I should note that you can easily go from terminal to Finder with the "open" command. To open the current directory of your terminal shell in Finder you can simply use this command:
open . Open Finder Directory In Terminal
This is the interesting bit that I just discovered today. You can actually turn on a feature built into Mac OS that extends the options provided when you right-click on a file or folder in finder to include an option for opening a terminal shell at that folder!
To enable it, go to Settings -> Shortcuts -> Services. Scroll down to the section for Files and Folders and check the box for New Terminal at Folder.
That's really all there is to it! Now you can open a terminal shell in a specific directory right from Finder!
This should save me like 20 seconds many, many times (not to mention saving me from the extreme agony and suffering of having to cd around all over the place)! Anyway, I hope this helps you too. ;)
Cheers!
