Publishing a Swf / Swc file.
A swf file is the compiled actionscript 3 code, images, animations, and / or sounds for the game. It contains ‘actionscript bytecode’ that is easily and quickly interpreted by the flash player to give the end-user the experience of playing the game or application. A swf file is similar to a .dll file in C# or a jar file in java in that it is code compiled into a new file type that is meant to be distributed. The swf is something that runs in flash player, a browser with flash player installed, or Adobe Air on local desktop. The swc file is similar to a swf file because it too is the published output from a flash project. Unlike a swf file however, a swc file is not meant to be run. It is a type of library file included other project. Both the .swf and .swc are file types created by Adobe, and so there are only a few programs you can use to create these files.
Creating a Swf / Swc in Professional
In Flash Professional it's pretty straightforward to create a swf or swc file. Go to File -> Publish Settings to open up the published dialog box. If you are using Flash Professional CC you see something very similar to the image below. If you're using an older version it might look different, but you should still have mostly the same options. On the left side of the dialog box you can tick the checkboxes for swf and swc. Clicking o the words swf or swf here should make the dialog pop-up window change accordingly to display the relevant information for publishing the respective file. Near the top of the dialog window’s content area you should see a text input for the file path. You can click the button to the right and browse through your hard drive for the directory that you want to save the published file (usually this is in a “bin” folder). You can click the Publish button to immediately create the files, or you can just hit ok to save your changes. Each time you run the project (either by going to Actions -> test movie or control + enter) it will also create a new swf / swc file. I actually prefer to create these files from Flash professional because it's quick and easy, and you can easily modify the graphical assets from here.
Creating A Swf / Swc from Flash Builder
You can also create a swift/sweat from the flash builder project. After you have created a flash builder project (see creating a new flash builder project) then you should see the project and explorer window on the left hand side of the program (assuming you have the default layout). Right-click on the actual project and go to debug configuration. This will bring up the dog configurations dialog window which will allow you to have you want the output file. Creating swc files in Flash Builder is not as straightforward than in Flash Professional, but it can be done. See the related articles below for more info on that.
