People Like Us Do Things Like This

One of my favorite bloggers, Seth Godin, is an author and entrepreneurship coach who emphasizes making quality products that people want over mindless "marketing" tactics to get customers. This is one of his favorite quotes:
People Like Us Do Things Like This.
In this brief article with the same title, he says that, "There is no more powerful tribal marketing connection than this". Indeed, in order for your app, clothing brand, or food product to really take off there needs to be a tribe behind it, a group of people who identify with the product. Godin then goes on to say, "More than features, more than benefits, we are driven to become a member in good standing of the tribe. We want to be respected by those we aspire to connect with, we want to know what we ought to do to be a part of that circle".
Godin has said multiple times in other posts that it's ok to turn some potential customers away saying, "Sorry, it's not for you". Don't market to the masses, market to your tribe.
